A SPAMS instrument determines the aerodynamic diameter and the presence of one or more active ingredient in each of up to 250 particles per second. The diameters can be used to bin the particles according to the same cut diameters as a Next Generation Impactor. An entire experiment can be conducted in five minutes and the data is analyzed on-line in real-time. When multiple active ingredients are found within the same particle, as in a combination product, that information is reported as well.
The savings of time and labor are dramatic. The experimental results can be returned rapidly enough to allow a pharmaceuticals scientist to adapt a formulation in response to the analysis. The process uses no solvents and, aside from the formulation under test, consumes only electricity.
